Overview

Elephant Pepper Camp is located in the middle of a 3600 sq km wilderness. It is situated within the protected Mara North Conservancy, away from other lodges. In order to preserve this special area the camp is seasonal and is closed for 2 months of the year.

Although extremely comfortable with spacious tents and en-suite bathrooms, the camp is very low key, with no generator to interfere with the sounds of the bush and resident lion pride! The camp has never poured one bag of cement and could be completely removed leaving a virgin site.

Other activities

Extended game drives which continue into the evening make game viewing a complete experience. Elephant Pepper Camp brings people back to nature – no traffic, no permanent structures, just the sights and sounds of the African bush.

Other activities are also available such as; guided bush walks, bush breakfasts, sundowners and cultural tours.

Environment and local community

Elephant Pepper Camp runs several community development schemes and eco-preservation projects:
  • Elephant Pepper Camp works very closely with a local school, and has currently raised enough funds to build a new classroom. Guests have the opportunity to visit the school if they wish.
  • When the area surrounding Elephant Pepper Camp was designated a wildlife conservation area by the Maasai, Elephant Pepper Camp was instrumental in helping the local Maasai relocate to their new homesteads. The camp also transported their building materials for them, in order to reduce the need for tree felling.
  • Revenue for land rent and game viewing fees goes directly to the Maasai landowners.
  • More than half of our staff are Maasai from the local area and trained at camp.
  • Visits to local Maasai villages give clients direct contact with the local people; it builds friendships and give tourism a real face. Viewing fees are paid directly to the Maasai people.
  • Rubbish is responsibly disposed of or recycled. For example, glass is separated and given to the East African Women's League, which runs the "Glass for Glasses" project whereby glass is exchanged for eyeglasses for the poor.
  • Elephant Pepper Camp is a member of Campfire Conservation Limited, which monitors the sharing of revenues paid to the Maasai community and has implemented 'Water from wildlife' projects. 'Water from Wildlife' has introduced water catchment and collection systems, as well as the concept of shallow wells.

Our opinion

Elephant Pepper Camp is a traditional safari camp that epitomises rugged style, class and sophistication. The location is perfect and the food and staff a credit to Kenyan hospitality.

Elephant Pepper is perfect for a special occasion or for those wishing to visit the Mara in style with a very good chance of seeing the elusive big 5.
