Overview

Chada Katavi is situated in the heart of Katavi National Park with a focus on the wildlife that often is not very far from the camp. Chada Katavi has been open for 20 years, and since opening very little has changed. Katavi promises total immersion into the natural world and the camp is concealed beneath the tree tops of Acacia and Tamarind trees surrounded by vast open spaces miles from anywhere. Chada Katavi is as far away as you can get from the main tourist circuit and because of this it feels untouched almost as if you are travelling back in time.

Facilities

Chada Katavi provides excellent service to their guests who will be able to enjoy their meals in the dining tent over looking the plain. The camp also boasts a library that although small, is very comfortable and guests will be able to while away the hours when they are not out in the midst of a safari adventure.

Other activities

As well as the unbelievable game drives that you can do in your own private 4x4, Chada Katavi offers the opportunity to experience a walking safari with your own guide and an armed scout, so make sure you bring a good pair of walking boots! You might find yourself watching elephants from up close or you might have chosen to have a stroll along the river to see the many types of birds, crocodiles or hippos who are all major features of the Katavi wildlife.

Chada Katavi also offers the more adventurous guests the opportunity to go fly camping where you will spend the night lying under the stars in a small tent with enough room for a bedroll kitted out with soft mattress, sheets and a feather pillow. In the evening you will sit down to a three-course candle lit meal and a glass of wine with a stunning backdrop to the main event before returning to your tent to listen to the wild animals that you would not normally hear in the day time.

Environment and local community

Chada Katavi has two very different seasons, the dry season which runs from June right through to the end of October, and the green season which starts from mid-November through to early June.

Chada Katavi does whatever it can to maintain a good relationship with the surrounding communities by employing staff from the near by villages. Water also becomes a rapidly limited resource at Chada Katavi in the dry season and because of this they take great care when considering the local environment realising that it is shared with a great deal of animals and take this issue very seriously.

Our opinion

Chada Katavi really is a gem where you will experience the real wilderness and not be disappointed! The concentration of wildlife here is extremely high due to the camps remote location. Although the camp is simple it really is beautiful and you can really see that so much thought and hard work has gone into the place, the attention to detail is simply charming.

The service at this camp is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. The staff are all extremely knowledgeable about the area and enthusiastic for their guests to see as much as possible. Even though the food at this camp is simple it really is delicious and you are guaranteed to have a fantastic experience here.

Can we have a romantic meal under the stars away from the communal dining area?
Yes you can! If you speak to the staff when you arrive they will arrange a romantic and delicious meal for 2 under the stars.

Will we be given lunch whilst out on safari?
Yes, the camp will provide you with packed lunches you will be able to take with you.
